Davis, a campus town, is best known for one of the highest ranking universities in Central California, the prestigious University of California at Davis. Davis is located west on Interstate 80 which is a straight shot from Sacramento and approximately 15 miles away from downtown Sacramento. Davis University is known for agriculture and their medial division which ranks highly.  The Mondavi center for the Performing Arts is one of the finest in the area.  The City of Davis calls itself, "The Bicycle Capital of the World."  Crisscrossed with bike trails, greenbelts, a downtown corner with a statue of 2 joggers, sidewalk cafes, bakeries, bookstores, theatres and art galleries gives the ambiance of the outdoor life and high energy of its residents.  The school rankings are among the highest in the state and many students go on to further their education right there in Davis, at the University.  Unlike Berkeley that is a more urban campus, Davis has a country atmosphere.

 

The streets in Davis are quaint with older homes, large lots and older trees.  Many of the homes were built in the 50's and 60's and Davis has kept building in the area to a minimum. However Mace Ranch on the east side houses approximately 5,800 newer homes and Wild horse is a master-planned community with a golf course, quite a few 2 story and four plus bedroom homes along with parks and other amenities. Lake Alhambra offers custom homes around a man-made lake which are quite lovely.

West Sacramento is right beside downtown Sacramento off hwy 80 and the two are separated by the Sacramento River which divides Sacramento County and Yolo County.  West Sac was primarily a blue-collar port town with labor intensive jobs.  West Sac incorporated in 1987 and the area consists of 4 areas: West Sacramento, Broderick, Bryte, and Southport. However, today there are many new master-planned communities with luxury homes and gated communities.  West Sac is home to the Minor league, Rivercats baseball team at Raley Field which is a triple A team affiliated with the Oakland A's., Ikea and a striking architecturally designed pyramid building known as Ziggurat.  There are about 10 bio tech firms and a company which is trying to develop a car that would be ecco friendly. 

 

West Sac is an alternative area for buyers who work in Davis but simply donΏt feel comfortable with the prices there. West Sacramento is a feasible alternative with an easy commute. A new luxury master-planned community of condos is being built called Regatta in 2006. Over 500 new apartments are being built that range from low and middle income to luxury apartments. In Southport there are 4 subdivisions, Bridgeway Lakes with 610 homes and a 32 acre man made lake, Newport Estates with 807 homes, Southport Gateway with 357 homes, Parella 1 and Parella II with 252 homes. There are about 6 other planned sites that have been identified for building new homes in West Sacramento.

Woodland is a mere 15-20 minutes from downtown Sacramento and just up hwy 113 from Davis.  Woodland is a farm town that is a bedroom community of 100 year old Victorians, bungalows and cottages where you will find maple and palm trees in the older section.  Springlake subdivision is a newer community located on the southwest side with thousands of homes and apartments built in 2003.  Much of Woodland has been preserved as farming with fields of tomatoes in the open countryside.  Sacramento International airport is a 10 minute ride.
